Yarriambiack Shire Council values the business community’s contribution to our Shire so whether you are an established business bringing about some changes, or you are brand new, our services are here to assist you to be successful in your endeavours.
Before starting a business, there are many things you might need to consider to ensure you are setting your business up for success. At Yarriambiack Shire Council, we are here to help guide you through the process, from providing the relevant information for your business idea to the application process for the permits you may require.

As a way of getting started, we’ve developed a handy roadmap for you to follow:
- Research your business idea. It might sound simple, but you need to know whether there’s a need for your business and whether you’ll have customers that want what you’re offering. By researching the market you can answer these questions.
- Write your business and marketing plans. Developing a business plan and a marketing plan is crucial to establishing a vision for the business and helping clarify the direction you want to take it.
- Work out your costs and finances. Your business plan should help identify set-up and ongoing costs associated with running a business. This is a key step in determining whether you can make your business work. Find out more about the common costs involved in starting a business.
- Other important details, like registrations and business name licensing. To operate a business, you need to look into the registrations & permits you will require, depending on the nature of your business. You also need to consider other requirements, such as obtaining an ABN and registering a business name.
- Enquire – phone, website, in-person. Check out website for other information relating to your business and services we can offer you. Phone the Council Office and be directed to the Business Support Officer or other relevant officer.
- Read our business permit guidance. To find out which permits you might need.
- Contact a member of the economic development team. If you want to discuss your idea or further enquire about permits.
- Get your documents together. If you come prepared it saves time and ensures your application is processed in a timely fashion
- Complete the relevant permits. These are available on our website or if you get in touch a council officer can send you the right forms.
- Contact a council officer if you need extra help completing applications. Our officers are happy to assist if you need help in any way
- Applications received. The relevant Council Officer will be assigned to your permit application. You are welcome to contact them to check on the status of your application and they will be available throughout this process
- Payment. There are fees that apply to all permit types. The details of your application will determine the exact fees and charges. The relevant Council Officer will contact you to confirm fee payment details
- Request for further information. You may get a request for further information during the assessment phase. Please be prompt in responding to any requests to ensure your application progresses smoothly.
- Inspections. For your application to proceed you may need to have an inspection performed. The relevant Council Officer will be in contact with you regarding this.
- Permits granted. You will be contacted with our decision. If your permit is approved we will send you a copy.
