UPDATE ON WARRACKNABEAL'S WOMBAT CROSSINGS
In late 2022 Council received a petition to have wombat crossings installed in Scott Street, Warracknabeal. The Townscape Committee recognised and received feedback from the community that the wombat pedestrian crossings and traffic control measures in Scott Street, could improve the safety of pedestrians while crossing the road. The Wombat Crossing also aims to reduce the speed of traffic through high pedestrian areas and give priority to pedestrians.

The community led petition to Council  included 260 responses. Over 96% of the responses were in favour of the installation of the Wombat Crossing.

At its November Meeting, Council endorsed the proposal of a Wombat Crossing (funding dependent), incorporating the installion of an extensive solution with altered kerbing, raised footpath, raised crossing, lighting, delineations and signage at an estimated cost $180,000 with a Council contribution of $90,000.

To ensure the safety of pedestrians, it has been a requirement to remove four car parks in total. Visibility and safe access to the Wombat Crossing has seen two car parks on each side of Scott Street removed.

This widely publicised community-led initiative will see great benefits to the pedestrians and business precinct for Warracknabeal.  Stay tuned for more updates and photos!
