Transfer Stations To be Cashless from 01 July 2025

Yarriambiack Shire Council currently operates eight transfer stations, a bi-monthly community waste and recycling collection in Yaapeet, and has temporarily closed the Patchewollock transfer station, as it undertakes a trial bi-monthly waste and recycling collection.

Council has fees and charges associated with the use of transfer station facilities, and currently only offers EFTPOS facilities at Warracknabeal, Hopetoun and Murtoa and during the week at Minyip and Rupanyup stations.

Tammy Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Yarriambiack Shire Council, confirmed “that the council is currently expanding its EFTPOS facilities. This expansion will include providing Rupanyup and Minyip with EFTPOS services on weekends and extending this option to Woomelang, Speed, and Beulah in the near future”.

“We recognise that our community has transitioned to a cashless method of payment during and post the COVID-19 pandemic and is now accustomed to this type of payment offering”, stated Mrs. Smith.

“We also acknowledge that customer spending habits have evolved, with the significant decline in the use of cash over the last few years, and greater requests for electronic methods of payments being received”, noted Mrs Smith.

“Taking on community and customer feedback, and wishing to implement risk management controls, we aim to transition to a cashless transfer station service from 01 July 2025.”

Mrs Smith noted, “There are many benefits to moving to a cashless service, such as creating staff efficiencies across the organisation, reducing the collection of cash from facilities, and the requirement to receipt and bank payments, and removing the additional internal controls required to be established when dealing with cash and cash handling practices.”

Mrs Smith also stated that, “with the transition to a cashless service, she hopes we will see a reduction in property damage occurring at our transfer stations from illegal access and trespassing.”

Mrs. Smith confirmed that most cards will be accepted (excluding American Express), and there will be no additional merchant charges.
