Kerbside Recycling Made Easy!

The best approach to recycling in your kerbside bin is to keep it simple; bellow is a list of what can go into your recycling bins.  Remember there are several other recycling options for many other recyclable items - but not in your kerbside bin.

What can go in your mixed recycling bin:

  • Hard or rigid plastic bottles and containers.
  • Paper and cardboard including clean pizza boxes (no waxed or greasy cardboard).
  • Aluminium cans, foil (scrunch into a ball) and trays.
  • Steel cans.
  • Empty aerosol cans.

What can go in your glass recycling bins:

  • Glass bottles and jars (that have contained food or drink).

What cannot go in your recycling bin:

  • Soft plastics (such as food wrappers, plastic bags and chip packets).
  • Cling wrap.
  • Bagged garbage or bagged recycling.
  • Long life milk or juice cartons.
  • Nappies or baby wipes.
  • Expanded polystyrene and foam (including meat trays).
  • Window glass, glassware, mirrors, Pyrex and crockery.
  • Food or garden waste.
  • Textiles and clothing.
  • Batteries and electronic waste.
  • Syringes.
  • Waxed cardboard.

Recycling Beyond Your Kerbside Bin!

There are many recycling opportunities beyond your yellow lidded recycling bin, some of these are:

Container Deposit Scheme - Most aluminium, glass, plastic and liquid paper board (carton) drink containers between 150mL and 3 litres are eligible.  There are reverse vending machines in Hopetoun, Warracknabeal and Murtoa.  Larger quantities can be taken to Axis Works on Golf Course Road in Horsham.

Household Batteries - There is a battery container in most communities across Yarriambiack Shire.  Batteries should not be placed in any kerbside bin.

Electronic or Electrical Waste - Anything with a cord or battery to run it can be dropped off at the Hopetoun, Warracknabeal & Murtoa Transfer Stations.  E-waste is not allowed to go in landfill.

Mattresses - Can be dropped off at all Transfer Stations for recycling.

Typres - Can be dropped off at all Transfer Stations for recycling.

Car Batteries - Can be dropped off at all Transfer Stations for recycling.

Paint - Can be dropped off at the Horsham Transfer Station as part of the Paintback scheme.

Chemical Drums - DrumMuster drums can be dropped off at all Transfer Stations.  They must be triple rinsed.

Scrap Metal - Including old fridges, microwaves, and washing machines can be dropped off at all Transfer Stations for recycling.

Cardboard - Large quantities can be dropped off at Transfer Stations for recycling.

Blister Packs for Pills - Can be dropped off at Priceline and Terry White Chemist in Horsham.

Spectacles - Can be dropped off at Specsavers in Horsham.

Polystyrene - Clean polystyrene can be dropped off at the Horsham Transfer Station.

Mobile Phones - Mobile Muster drop off location at the Yarriambiack Shire Council Municipal Office, or you can request a pre-paid satchel from Australia Post.

Green Waste - Can be dropped off at all Transfer Stations free-of-charge.

Clothing - If it is still wearable, take it to an op-shop.

Household Furniture and Goods - if still usable, try an online marketplace or an op-shop.

X-rays - Are one of those items that can be recycling but not in the kerbside recycling bin.  The easiest way to get your old X-rays recycled is to post them to Siltech at 7/220 Barry Road, Campbellfield VIC 3061.  There is no charge for the service.  It is best to remove the film from the envelopes and destroy the envelopes yourself.  X-rays can be cut to size for postage if required.

*Please note that some items at the Transfer Station attract a fee - this reflects the cost of getting those items recycled.
