Uniting Vic.Tas regretfully has announced to their families the temporary closure of the Hopetoun Uniting Early Learning Centre, effective Monday, 01 April 2024. The decision stems from an ongoing and exhaustive effort to secure qualified professionals in the field of Early Childhood Education and Care, a challenge exacerbated by a significant skills shortage across the region.

Yarriambiack Shire Council, Mayor Kylie Zanker said, “that despite the relentless dedication of Uniting staff to attract suitable candidates, the organisation has been unable to fill crucial positions at the Hopetoun Uniting Early Learning Centre”. “This situation is further complicated by a widespread shortage of certified professionals holding either Certificate III or Diploma qualifications in Early Childhood Education and Care”.

“The rural location of Hopetoun compounds the difficulty in recruitment efforts. The geographical challenges faced by rural communities make it inherently challenging to compete for qualified professionals, especially when contending with similar shortages in large regional centres and metropolitan areas”, Mayor Zanker stated.

Uniting acknowledges the impact of this temporary closure on the families attending the Hopetoun Uniting Early Learning Centre and expresses sincere regret for any inconvenience caused. The organisation remains committed to finding a viable solution to continue operations at the earliest opportunity.

In light of this situation, Mayor Zanker strongly encourages qualified Early Childhood professionals, both locally and beyond, to consider joining the team at Hopetoun Uniting Early Learning Centre. “I strongly encourage individuals with a Certificate III, Diploma, or working towards a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care to reach out to Kate Farlow, Program Manager for Western Victoria at Uniting Wimmera, and discuss the job opportunity”, stated Mayor Zanker.

Mayor Zanker reaffirmed that “Hopetoun is a beautiful community, surrounded by an abundance of natural assets to explore such as Lake Lascelles, and Wyperfeld National Park being within close proximity.  The community has an active arts culture, operating from the Hopetoun Powerhouse, and an abundance of sporting and recreational activities on offer”.

Mayor Zanker encouraged people interested in moving to the region to contact her, as she would be more than happy to promote the Yarriambiack Shire and all its offerings.

Uniting appreciates the ongoing support of the community and Council and remains committed to delivering high-quality Early Childhood Education and Care services once staffing challenges are addressed.
