Council’s Cat Desexing Program A Huge Success

In 2022 Yarriambiack Shire Council was successful in obtaining $10,000 funding through the Animal Welfare Victoria (AWV) grants program to subsidise a cat desexing program. This program was delivered in partnership with the National Desexing Network and Wimmera Mallee Veterinary Services.

The desexing program was available to eligible residents, with vouchers issued by the National Desexing Program to those who met a certain criterion. Residents participating in the program each saved hundreds of dollars in veterinary procedure costs. Eligible participants were able to get their cats desexed for a very low cost of $50.00 and also microchipping for $5.00.

Yarriambiack Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Tammy Smith said, “Over a 12 month period, 64 cats have been desexed, including 17 male and 47 female cats. This number has exceeded the original goal at the start of the program to have 50 cats desexed, which is a fantastic outcome for the program and the community”.

Like many areas within Victoria, Yarriambiack Shire Council experiences significant issues associated with stray and unwanted cats. This program makes a small yet valuable contribution towards addressing the broader cat issues.
