Battery Safety Over Christmas
Published on 19 December 2024
We all know that there is an increasing number of battery-operated gadgets that may end up in your Christmas stocking this year - whether they be children's toys, power tools, e-bikes, digital gaming devices or other household gadgets.
What is important is that you do not place any used batteries into your general waste or recycling bin for kerbside collections. There have been an increasing number of garbage truck fires caused by batteries - particularly lithium-ion batteries. The potential is to not only cause harm to property and to the environment but also to people.
The Yarriambiack Shire has a number of locations that you can return batteries (at no charge). Along with our transfer stations, batteries can be dropped off at:
- Rupanyup IGA
- Minyip IGA
- Murtoa & District Neighbourhood House
- Council Municipal Office - Warracknabeal
- Beulah Business & Information Centre
- Hopetoun & District Neighbourhood House
- Patchewollock Community Store
- Speed Post Office
Please remember that batteries cannot be placed into your household waste or recycling bin.
Safety Tip: Taping over battery terminals with electrical or sticky tape will keep batteries safe and reduce the risk of fire when they are being transported.
